Selenium WebDriver is a W3C Recommendation. It drives browsers locally or through a remote Selenium server, with language bindings around the browser-control implementations. Selenium Grid routes those commands to remote browser instances and runs tests across machines, browser versions, and operating systems.
I wouldn’t replace a working Selenium fleet because a newer tool has a cleaner demo.
WebDriver owns browser commands
A Selenium program can navigate, find elements, click, type, wait, inspect state, and assert what the page shows. The program can also call the rest of the team’s code. A database read-back or API check can decide success. A queue, audit log, approval step, or retry rule can sit around the browser session.
Selenium leaves those choices open. For a test suite, that freedom is useful. A failed test can stop with a stack trace and wait for a developer.
A timeout can mean two outcomes
Business automation has another ending to handle. A timeout after a consequential click can mean the server received nothing. It can also mean the server committed the write before the response vanished. A retry that helps the first case can create a duplicate in the second.
The browser error cannot settle that transaction.
The surrounding code owns the result
A careful Selenium system can retain pre-action identity, classify the delivery state, suppress a blind retry, and query an independent source of truth. Teams with that code already built should keep it.
The maintenance cost includes more than selectors. Someone owns the outcome types, evidence retention, workflow versions, repair review, operator handoff, and every rule that decides whether the next action is safe.

Keep the fleet when it answers the whole question
Browser-only work with a clear code owner and sufficient assertions belongs comfortably in Selenium. The same is true when an organization already operates Grid and has transaction handling around it.
